April 22nd, 2012My thoughts on Angela Corey and the Trayvon Martin / George Zimmerman Trial
April 13th, 2012Everybody is talking about the George Zimmerman trial, so I figure I’ll throw in my two cents, as well.
It seems clear to me that the special prosecutor Angela Corey really didn’t want to arrest Zimmerman. It’s one of those “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” scenarios for her, because you either upset the Trayvon Martin supporters by not making an arrest, or you piss off the “Stand Your Ground” supporters by making the arrest.
But, ultimately, pressure from public outry became too strong to ignore, and the decision was made to arrest Zimmerman. So, she slaps a second-degree murder charge on him, knowing that there isn’t enough evidence to support that and Zimmerman will likely beat the case. Her hope is that Zimmerman will be acquitted, which would appease the “Stand Your Ground” crowd, and she can then turn around and tell the Trayvon Martin supporters “hey, we tried our best.” The whole thing stinks of bad politics and the special prosecutor trying to keep both sides happy (and her own hands clean).
That is just my take on things, at least. Call this a conspiracy theory if you will, but I don’t think this scenario is all that far fetched. For the record, I’m not trying to paint Corey as some evil mastermind, I just think she was put in a really tough spot where, either way, she is probably going to come out of this as the target of public anger, and she reacted accordingly. I’m really just trying to explore the mentality behind waiting forever to arrest Zimmerman, and then overcharging him. It doesn’t add up.
